About the 99 names of Allah: 

How can you love someone when you know nothing about them?  Muslims know Allah through his creation and his attributes which are preserved in the Qur'an and the sound traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The Prophet (PBUH) is reported to have said that "Allah has ninety nine Names, one hundred minus one.  Anyone who learns them goes to paradise." (Bukhari, Muslim)

Allah reminds us to call upon him with these beautiful names in the Qur'an:

Call upon Allah, or call upon the All-merciful; whichever you call upon, to him belong the Most Beautiful Names (17:10)

Allah has the Most Beautiful Names; So call Him by them. (7:180) 

These names give an opportunity for us to remember and ponder about our Creator and that rememberance (dzikr) leads to comfort for the soul:

Those who believe, and whose hearts find satisfaction in the remembrance of Allah.  For without doubt, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find satisfaction. (13:28)
